Asus Router Firmware

How to Upgrade an Asus Router Firmware or Range Extender ?

The greatest thing you can do to get the latest features and protect yourself from the latest security vulnerabilities, malware, and viruses on the web is to update the Asus Router Firmware on your Wireless Router. It takes only a few seconds. We’ll show you how to do it.

How to Update the Asus Router Firmware

We’ll use an Asus RT-AC68U AC1900 Dual-Band Wi-Fi Range Extender (RX) with external antennas for this demonstration. The model number for this device is RT-AC66U; however, it is identical to the RT-AC68U. If you own one of these devices, you’re surely aware that changing the firmware will eliminate certain bothersome problems and improve overall performance.

If you’ve been using it for a while, there’s a good possibility you won’t notice any differences between the old and new versions. What happens, though, if something goes wrong? What if a component of the gadget malfunctions?

Isn't it true that you'll have to update the firmware anyway?

So, let’s begin by going over the steps for updating the firmware on your RT-AC68U:

1.) Make sure your router is connected to a high-speed internet connection first.

3.) On the top menu bar, select “Upgrade.”

4.) Choose “Download & Install” and wait for the procedure to complete.

5.) Reboot your router after the installation is complete. That concludes our discussion.

Your router should now be able to use the upgraded firmware.

Between you and all the bad stuff on the internet, your wireless router is your first (and sometimes last) line of defense. Viruses, malware, command and control, botnets, DDOS, Trojans, hackers, and other threats are constantly hammering on your digital door. And, in many cases, it’s the fact that your router knows better than to let them in that keeps them from gaining control of every device on your home network.

For the most part, every router does an excellent job of safeguarding you from all of the internet’s bad guys. However, hackers and jerks worldwide are always discovering new vulnerabilities, and the only way to stay current is to maintain your router’s software up to date.

Asus Router Firmware

Firmware is the low-level software that runs on your device. Your router, in this scenario. Think of it as your router’s operating system. to ensure your router operates smoothly. It must be updated with the newest security patches and fixes, much as Windows is updated regularly (like all the time, amirite?). When a security flaw is discovered, the manufacturer will usually repair it as a firmware update. Firmware upgrades also correct issues, enhance general performance, and even provide new functionality. As a result, installing them is a great idea. It’s a fantastic suggestion.

I recently purchased an ASUS RT-AC3200 wireless router. The following steps will be taken with this in mind.

Before you begin, make sure that Updating your Asus Router Firmware (or failing to do so) can brick your router in rare situations.

It’s sometimes just a case of the settings getting wiped out, and all you have to do is reset it, disconnect it for approximately 15 minutes, reconnect via Ethernet connection, and set it up again. Other times, it’s completely toasting, and you’ll need to run the firmware recovery tool or downgrade it.

In any event, having a backup router on hand is a good idea. Hopefully, you haven’t thrown out all of your old routers, but before you start, double-check that they work (and that you have the correct power supply).

Use a cable or wireless connection to connect to your router. Go to in your web browser. If it doesn’t work, type in your router’s IP address (typically

Using your administrator credentials, log into your router. These are not the same credentials that you use to access the internet over your wireless network. This is the username and password you used to set up your router the first time. If you can’t remember your password, use the default:

Username: admin Password: Default Password

The default password is “admin,” which is a joke. But seriously, if you haven’t already, you should do so right now. Put your new login and password in Advanced Settings, Administration, and System.

After you’ve changed your router login password, search for the Firmware Version at the top of the screen. You’ll see a flashing yellow exclamation point in the top-right corner if it’s out of date. To access the firmware update screen, click the firmware version, or navigate Advanced Settings, Administration, and Firmware Upgrade.

The Firmware Upgrade screen will inform you whether new firmware is available and provide you with the changelog. Keep an eye out for the part under “Security Updates.” These are the most crucial. Click Firmware Upgrade to install the firmware.

If your wife is viewing Netflix at the time, be aware that your network will reboot and apply the firmware upgrade.

Suppose your ASUS router isn’t already detecting the firmware update, and you know one is available (for example, you obtained it from the ASUS website). In that case, you can check for a newer version by selecting Check or manually uploading a firmware file from ASUS.

Just make sure the firmware you’re downloading is genuine and comes from the ASUS support website. Some models (such as the RT-AC3200) will enter emergency mode if a firmware update fails for any reason (power outage during the upgrade, firmware file corruption, etc.). If this happens, you can restore your machine using the Firmware Restoration application on the CD.

Notes from Asus

The following is taken from the release notes for Version

ASUS is committed to working with third-party developers to create new and creative features. To comply with regulatory changes, we changed the firmware verification rule to ensure higher firmware quality

. All previous ASUS firmware and uncertified third-party firmware are incompatible with this version.

This doesn’t appear to do with the signature, at least not in the manner I expected.

If I learn more about ASUS signature versions, I’ll update this post.

That’s how you upgrade the firmware on an ASUS router, in any case. Please leave them in the comments section below!

Some screenshots and procedures may alter depending on the software version.

On an Asus router, how to manually flash Merlin firmware

The good news is that flashing your router from Asuswrt to Merlin is the same as updating the stock firmware manually. It’s simple enough.

All you have to do is download the firmware and install it on the router via the online user interface, just like any other router’s firmware update process.

The steps to manually flash a Merlin or stock firmware file on an Asus router are outlined below. I used an RT-AC88U unit, but these instructions may flash any other model with stock or Merlin.

Final Thoughts

Previously, I had no idea what the signature was for, and the ASUS documentation does not mention it. When I contacted ASUS tech support, they responded as follows:

Please be aware that the signature firmware version is required to enable router security features such as Aiprotection utilities. You may check for updates for your router signature ID from the firmware download page, which is different from what I thought it was for.

It seems that it had something to do with making sure you’re using genuine ASUS firmware. That would make it impossible to install third-party or open-source router firmware like DD-WRT or Tomato.

I flashed my four RT-AC68U AiMesh nodes this morning. Can’t speak to the DDNS difficulties because these aren’t my primary routers.

Steps to troubleshoot an Asus router quickly

We sometimes hope that our technological equipment will never display any evidence of technical failure. However, this is rarely the case. Regardless, there is always a solution for technical issues such as “asus router firmware not updating.” This could happen for a variety of reasons. Here are a few troubleshooting ideas to help you address the problem.

If updating your Asus firmware is proving problematic, the firmware file you downloaded may be incompatible with your router.

Verify that your connection to the Asus router network is stable. If you don’t, you can get an update error.

It’s also possible that the IP address you typed into your browser is incorrect. If you don’t have the necessary login information for your Asus router account, you won’t be able to update the firmware.
